Stinging Pests

Brief description

Insect control requires individual approach, because each type of stinging insects has its own peculiarities of life and behavior. Before you begin pest control, it is necessary to accurately identify and determine the type of insect. These types include:

  • Bees
  • Wasps
  • Hornets
  • Scorpions
  • Yellow jackets

Stinging-Pests

You should not confuse bites with stings. Insect use its sting as a means of protection if it feel a threat to itself or to its colony. With the help of sting stinging pests inject poison under the skin of human. The effect is immediate and causes acute burning pain. Despite the fact that most often sting is remedy of protection, some insects use it to drink the blood.

In most cases people are attacked by wasps and bees. However, wasps are more aggressive and sting at the slightest provocation on the part of human. Stings by the bees are less likely. They leave a sting under the skin that continues to produce the poison for one minute. In its turn sting of wasps and hornets is very painful and leaves a small hole on the skin. After their bite is formed redness and itching that can not break a few hours. Stings by a scorpion are very painful. At the place of injury arises burning pain, skin becomes red and quickly swells.

The habitat

Hornets and wasps have silent and peaceful nest locations.They build nests under the overhanging edge of the roof, on a mansard, attics or in sheds, as hornets’ nest located in a hollow tree and often on the ground in the empty rodent holes. The nests of these insects are not durable as the material for their construction is wood materials mixed with the saliva. The reason of their fragility is a poor resistance to dampness and moisture.

Paper wasps prefer to build their nests in places protected from the wind, rain, animals and other threats to their colony and larvae. Residential buildings of people are best suited for their nesting. Wasps usually penetrate into homes through small cracks and openings in the eaves of the building or window. Garages and sheds – are also a favorite nesting place.

In nature, wild bees settle in the hollows of trees. For them is suitable spacious enough place which is well protected from the wind and in pleasant proximity of the pond.

Scorpios are heat-loving animals, some species prefer dry hot deserts, while others live in tropical rain forests, and even on the coast.

Harm to human

Stinging-Pests-Harm-to-humanMany people are very sensitive to stings, but especially from them suffer children. The main risk group is people who have allergy on poison, which gets into the blood at stings. Allergy on stings can occur even if before it was not observed. At normal average human sensitivity stings cause only local skin inflammatory response.

You should definitely keep in mind – if you feel that began a severe allergic reaction on stings, you should immediately call a doctor! The main symptoms of allergic reaction:

  • The edema around the throat, mouth or tongue, which makes it difficult to breath;
  • Asphyxiation;
  • Headache, dizziness, or fainting;
  • Any pain in the chest;
  • Nausea and stomach cramps.

Another group of risk is people who suffer from other forms of allergies (to pollen or pet hairs). Remember, allergy on stings can appear at any moment!

Talking about scorpions, it is important to say, that they do not attack humans expressly. However, scorpion can make its poisonous injection in the state of fear, for example, when you accidentally pinned down it. On the site of stings appears itch and disappears skin sensitivity. Then there is redness and swelling, in the middle of this place you may notice a dark point of the sting. Stings of some species of these insects can be deadly, so first of all you need go to the hospital.

Causes, why appear such insects in the houses

If wasp or hornets flew into the house, they can be destroyed in many ways, but for the bees it is not applicable, because they bring benefit. If you notice in your home these insects in large quantities – it talks about one thing: close to home is their nest. It is important as soon as possible to remove it. For example, in the late summer wasps become more aggressive, so it is best to eliminate it in early summer in order to reduce the risk of stings.

Basically stinging pests get into our house randomly. They may be attracted by different odors or flowers in the house. Pests are often looking for food or a secluded place during poor weather conditions.

Period of activity of the pests

In cloudy weather and twilight they are not active. This applies to wasps, bees and hornets. Warmer weather makes these insects more active. In a sunny day, they fly in search of food. As stinging insect sting in self-defense, so their behavior becomes more aggressive in the case of danger. At nightfall activity is reduced almost to naught.

Exception is scorpions. On the contrary, they begin to actively move around precisely during the night.

Life Cycle

The life cycle of stinging insects is very similar. For example, the life cycle of the wasp begins in winter, when the fertilized queen goes into hibernation. They often hibernate in the quiet and protected areas such as stumps and hollow logs, although they may also choose artificial constructions. In the spring the queen comes out of hibernation and begins to build a nest from plant fibers for the colony.

Then she begins to lay eggs. After some time appears the larvae, the queen feeds them with insects, as well as animal products such as meat, fish, etc. The first posterity is infertile females (working individuals) that expand the nest, bring food and take care of the queen and the entire colony. After appears the first brood of workers wasps, queen is no longer leave the nest, and continues to lay eggs until the beginning of the cold weather. In late summer in the nest will appear larvae, ready to be males (drones) and fertile females. These males and females leave their colony to mate. After mating the drones die and fertilized females go in search of a suitable site for hibernation. Working individuals of wasps die with the onset of cold weather, and only the queen can survive the winter, staying in the nest in order to in the spring to revive the colony.

Methods of dealing

The most effective method to control stinging insects is the destruction of colonies in nest. For today there are several ways to destroy them. These are traps, baits and processing with pesticides.

  • The destruction of nests.

The slightest approximation to the nest causes in the colony of stinging insects’ aggressive state and to protect the nest gets up the whole swarm. Before removal or destruction of nests it is necessary to take precautionary measures against possible stings: you must wear closed clothes, gloves, goggles or protective mesh. The edges of the clothes should fit snugly to the body in order to insects could not crawl under clothing.

  • Traps.

Trapping of queens into the traps – is the destruction of the future colony, but in some regions it is not very effective due to the arrival of new migrants in the liberated territories. Traps are non-toxic and do not contain pesticides, their task is to lure pests by using odor (attractant) in the form of cans plexiglass with a sticky surface inside. Some of these traps have the function of inputs and do not allow insects to get out of it. The traps will not eliminate all pests but can help reduce the problem.

  • Poisonous baits.

In order to combat with stinging insects, you can use special microcapsules containing insecticide. Working individual bears a piece of bait with microcapsules to the nest, it feeds queen and larvae. Then the shell of microscopic capsules decomposes in the digestive tract of insects, which will soon die.

  • Pesticide processing.

There are several types of pesticides to control and destroy pests. The best time of destruction is after dark, when the workers are in the nest.

These methods apply only to wasps, yellow jackets and hornets. If you are concerned about the bees, you should use more sparing methods, because the bees are beneficial to humans.

People sensitive to insect’s stings should take care of how to reduce the risk of stings. There are several things that must take into account each person.

To avoid stings outdoors:

  • Avoid wearing bright clothes, do not use strong perfumes because all this attracts insects;
  • On exposed areas of body apply insect repellent;
  • Do not leave opened sweet foods and drinks;
  • Well inspect the place where you want to sit or lie down;
  • Avoid potential places where these insects can be collected, for example, orchard.

Never attempt to kill the wasps or bees. It increases the probability of stings. If the insect flown up close in no way do not wave your hands and do not panic, it is even more will anger them. Do not raise panic, but quietly walk away.
